The currency was issued during the reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who ruled the Sultanate of Oman from 1970 to 2020 (1390-1441 AH).

It was issued to commemorate World Wildlife Day and was minted on the seventh National Day.

Obverse: The emblem of the Sultanate of Oman, two crossed swords and a dagger. Below it is the number 1397.

Margin: Qaboos bin Said, Sultan of Oman.

Reverse: An Arabian oryx motif, with the inscription “5 Omani Rials” above it.
