سابقا كانت الروبية الهندية تستخدم بنطاق واسع وللحد من التوتر على الاحتياطيات الأجنبية للهند من تهريب الذهب الناجمة عن هذا الاستخدام الخارجي للروبية تم إنشاء الروبية الخليجية المعروفة أيضا باسم روبية الخليج العربي كانت العملة المستخدمة في دول الخليج العربي وشبه الجزيرة العربية بين عامي 1957 و1966. صدرت من قبل حكومة الهند والبنك الاحتياطي الهندي وكانت تعادل الروبية الهندية ، وفي عام 1966 م خفضت الهند قيمتها مما قامت الدول بإصدار عملاتها الخاصة بها كالكويت والبحرين وتبعتها باقي الدول الخليجية.

Previously, the Indian rupee was widely used, and to reduce the strain on India’s foreign reserves from gold smuggling resulting from this external use of the rupee, the Gulf rupee, also known as the Arabian Gulf rupee, was created. It was the currency used in the Arabian Gulf and Arabian Peninsula countries between 1957 and 1966.

It was issued by the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India and was equivalent to the Indian Rupee. In 1966, India devalued it, prompting countries like Kuwait and Bahrain to issue their own currencies, followed by the rest of the Gulf countries.
