He was famous for unifying the country and expanding his influence, building a huge royal capital in Meknes, and establishing a strong army of “Abid al-Bukhari”. He was nicknamed “al-Samin” (the fat one) perhaps because of his size or the large number of his sons, which made his name associated with power and sovereignty in an era when Morocco was prosperous and strong in the face of European powers, and he became known as the “Moroccan Versailles” because of the enormity of his building.
