This coin was minted during the presidency of Jacques Chirac, who governed from 1995 to 2007. Obverse: In the center of the coin is an oak branch with two acorns. /In the inner circle at the bottom right, next to the stem of the oak branch, is the year of issue, 2002. /At the bottom left is a small letter representing the mint mark. /Around the outer edge are the twelve stars of the European Union – symbolizing the original twelve member states. Reverse: The reverse features a globe in the lower right, illustrating Europe’s position relative to Africa and Asia. The design of the 1-5 cent coins aims to highlight the European Union’s global standing, unlike the 1- and 2-euro coins, which depict the fifteen member states as a single entity, and the 10-50 cent coins, which show the EU countries individually. Behind the globe, six diagonal lines connect the twelve stars of Europe—six around the lower left, the emblem appears; above the left, the numeral value is 5; and on two lines above, the denomination is 1 euro cent.
