This dirham was minted during the reign of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1391-1425 AH / 1971-2004 AD). The dirham was issued to commemorate the UNESCO designation of Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World. The obverse features the 1-dirham note, surrounded by the words “United Arab Emirates” in Arabic and English. It is rarely circulated. Reverse: The logo is written underneath in Arabic and English, “Sharjah Capital of Culture.” Between them are the numbers “98,” the year 1998, the year the banknote was chosen.
