This coin was minted during the French occupation, when Syria was (nominally) ruled by Muhammad Ali al-Abid, president of the First Syrian Republic.

Obverse: In the center is written (½), above it is written (Syrian Republic), below it is written (Half a piaster), and below that is the date of issue, 1936 AD.

Reverse: At the bottom are two ears of wheat with (½) written inside, below it is written in English (piaster), below it is written the date of issue, 1936 AD, and above it written in French (Syrian Government)
